Lad and Dad

It's 2026, and the Fish and Chips Wars are in full effect at Wisma Cosway.

For those in the know, there are two competing fish and chip cafés at Wisma Cosway: Boys Don't Fry and Lad and Dad. What is less well known is that they were once business partners before the owner of Lad and Dad split away from Boys Don't Fry to open his own shop. Today, it's this challenger that we're reviewing.

There are no frills at Lad and Dad. It's here to serve fish and chips, and that's exactly what it does. Once seated, we got straight to work ordering. My first point of complaint, however, is the ordering system. Everything is done via QR code, which I absolutely hate. Fish and chip shops should be community places where you interact with the staff—they're part and parcel of the experience. QR codes just feel detached and cold.

Anyway, rant over.

We ordered the classic perch fish and chips, with mushy peas for her and curry sauce for me. Halibut is also available if you're feeling flush, but it's considerably more expensive and probably best reserved for a special treat.



Right off the bat, we encountered the recurring theme of Malaysian fish and chip shops: frozen chips. At Lad and Dad, you can choose between battered chips or plain thick-cut chips. We ordered one of each and, to be fair, they were very well cooked—crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. For frozen chips, they were excellent.

The fish, however, is the undisputed star of the show. The portion is generous, the perch is perfectly cooked, and it's wrapped in a wonderfully light, crispy batter. In fact, the serving was so substantial that I couldn't finish it all. The curry sauce was enjoyable too, although it's definitely Malaysian-style curry rather than the classic British chip shop variety.

All in all, Lad and Dad is well worth a visit. In this humble writer's opinion, they're currently winning the Fish and Chips War at Wisma Cosway.
