BLUE REEF TTDI
Since the first job I ever had was working on a fish and chips food truck—and given that I'm a complete snob when it comes to this sort of food—I've decided to start a weekly blog reviewing the best and worst fish and chips I've come across in Malaysia. We begin this journey with Blue Reef Fish and Chips, located in TTDI.
Situated over two floors in the heart of TTDI, Blue Reef was recommended to me by a friend who raved about their food, so we just had to check it out. The space inside was laid out well, though that doesn't really matter to me when it comes to chippy food—I'm just there for the food coma, thank you very much. We got our seats and checked out the menu. You have a choice of five different types of fish: Tilapia, Barramundi, Snapper, Grouper, and Halibut, with a choice of either beer batter or a breaded batter for those seeking a halal option. We went for the beer-battered Barramundi with chips and sat back to wait for our order.
Waiting time is always an important factor in the enjoyment of a meal, but I'm glad to report that both our meals arrived within 15 minutes of ordering. One nice, thick piece of fish, chips on the side, and of course, tartar sauce (you would never get this with fish and chips in Ireland). And I'm happy to report that the most important condiment was available—malt vinegar.
Now for the good. The fish was excellent—perfectly cooked, dry but not overly so, and flaking apart beautifully when touched. The batter was also very well done—crispy, well-seasoned, and wrapped around the fillet just as it should be. I was very impressed with this piece of fish. The tartar sauce was fresh and well-made, with the zing required to make it memorable.
The bad, you ask? Well, that would be the chips. They were just the standard frozen variety—nothing much to write home about, other than the fact that they were crispy. But when your shop specializes in fish and chips, you expect fresh chips.
To be fair to the owner, he did acknowledge that the chips are a weak point and mentioned that they’re working on a method to make them fresh to order, which is commendable.
Overall, Blue Reef is definitely a place worth visiting. If they manage to sort out their chip situation, they'll be a 10/10 for me. Until then, they get a solid 8/10.
