Our latest iteration of The Great Malaysian Fish and Chip Hunt® takes us to The Gardens Mall at Mid Valley and to Shucked Oyster Bar.
While it’s literally a bar in reality—since it’s not an actual shop you go into—Shucked still offers that upscale, “aw naw, this is going to hurt my wallet” ambiance you get once you enter the hallowed halls of The Gardens Mall. I could whine on about class structure in modern-day Malaysia, but we’re here for the fish and chips, so let’s get down to it, eh?
While technically not a fish and chips establishment—their speciality being oysters (duh)—Shucked does offer a choice between the Malaysian favourite, barramundi, and the Irish standard of Atlantic cod. This time I decided to go with the cod, while my wife went for the barramundi. So we placed our orders and sat back to wait.
First of all, the food came within 15 minutes, which is always a plus point in my book. There’s nothing worse than having to wait a ridiculous amount of time for chippy food. So, let’s get the bad out of the way first—and that is, of course, the fries (from this point onwards in all my blogs, I will be referring to non-fresh potato chips as fries). It’s the usual Malaysian fare of simple frozen fries, although they do get somewhat of a pass from me, as the logistics of their shop would make it a struggle to prep and cook fresh potato chips.
Next is the fish, and I’m glad to say both the barramundi and the cod were excellent. The batter was on point and had great flavour with the right amount of crispiness, good big portions, and both types of fish were cooked to perfection—just the right amount of dryness where the fish flakes apart while eating it. The tartar sauce was also tasty, but as I never grew up with it, it’s not a live-or-die moment for me.
All in all, Shucked is well worth a visit, and my aw naw fears about my wallet were not manifested, as the price was the standard you’d expect.
